Hazards of Working in Urban Environments

Overview

This session introduces the possible hazards facing employees who work in urban environments and nearby to homeless encampments. Urban hazards can affect construction sites/crews, workers on the right-of-way, city and county workers, emergency responders, facilities maintenance crews, security personnel, environmental and safety consultants, oil and gas well servicing personnel, surveying crews, highway workers, transportation employees, lawn care/tree trimmers, utility workers, and many more.

Attendees will experience an eye-opening introduction to the unexpected variety of hazards that can occur in urban environments. Participants will be challenged to think “outside the box” of traditional safety and risk management concepts, and to see a "whole new world" of urban safety hazards that may face their workforce, such as meth labs and homeless encampments.  Examples and photos of these work environments, locations, and associated traditional and nontraditional hazards will be presented.

After attending this session, students should be able to:

  • Explain what is meant by “urban hazards”
  • Name three examples of work forces who face urban hazards
  • Identify at least three traditional and nontraditional hazards of working in urban environments
  • Identify chemical hazards associated with methamphetamine labs
  • Identify hazards of homeless encampments
  • From participation in a workshop, identify possible safety management strategies and control methods to protect workers in urban environments
