AB 2800 was fast-tracked through this year’s legislative session and approved by Governor Jerry Brown last month. AB 2800 was authored by Assemblyperson Kansen Chu in response to the death of two student-athletes in California last year from heat illness. 

AB 2800 amends Section 35179.1 of the Education Code which now requires that all California high school coaches receive training that will teach them how to recognize the signs and symptoms of heat illness and how to take appropriate action.  The specific illnesses of concern are heat cramps, heat syncope, heat exhaustion, and exertional heat stroke.

The California Interscholastic Federation developed resources to help districts comply with this new requirement. In addition, we have worked with our online Learning Management System (LMS) provider to incorporate The National Federation of State High School Associations’ free online course into an assignable custom activity, which can be found on the TargetSolutions platform.

Safe Schools Now!
Dr. Steve Albrecht will be recording three new webcasts this month in a series titled “Safe Schools Now”.  The prerecorded webcasts will focus on how threat assessment teams can prevent active shooter situations, as well as how to harden campuses to limit the damage inflicted by a would-be attacker.  The three webcasts will be available on July 19th.
