Child Abuse Prevention Month
In California there are nine million children. One out of four will experience abuse or neglect in their lifetime. In recognition of Child Abuse Prevention Month, the Office of Child Abuse Prevention (OCAP) created this toolkit to help raise awareness to end child abuse. Use it to amplify your message that child abuse and neglect is intolerable and must be stopped.

Preparing for Outdoor Activities
Our new Risk Simplified addresses key areas to examine in an effort to mitigate dangerous conditions on athletic fields and outdoor areas accessed by the public during graduation ceremonies, field days, and other outdoor activities.
Complying with Cal/OSHA’s Outdoor Heat Illness Prevention Standard
According to Title 8 CCR, Section 3395, employers with outdoor employees are required to comply with Cal/OSHA’s Outdoor Heat Illness Prevention Standard. This typically applies to employee classifications in a school district such as grounds keepers, maintenance workers, campus monitors, yard duty workers, and custodians.

To help our Members, we have created a new Risk Simplified reviewing common violations of Cal/OSHA’s Outdoor Heat Illness Prevention Standard. We suggest that Members review their heat illness prevention plan every April. If you don’t currently have a written plan, please contact us for assistance.
Safety Talk of the Month: Driving Defensively
In recognition of National Defensive Driver Awareness Month, our suggested safety talk is driving defensively. Ask your directors of classified staff to deliver this short in-person training to their departments. Although less effective than face-to-face delivery, it can also be emailed or inserted into paycheck envelopes.

If you are interested in additional toolbox resources, our safety talk compendium was recently expanded to include over 140 safety related topics. Please contact the Risk Control Department for the password information required to access the complete resource.
