About The Position

The Underwriting Specialist provides administrative support and underwriting assistance to the Underwriting Department. PRISM is a public agency and PRISM’s coverage programs are governed by committees. The Underwriting Specialist will assist the department in preparing for committee meetings, which may include writing agenda items, documenting underwriting decisions for disclosure, and preparing presentations. The Underwriting Specialist will assist the Senor Specialists with various underwriting tasks including providing premium quotes for additional insured requests, retention/deductible changes, and reviewing exposure data in renewal applications. This position is responsible for ensuring that Underwriting activities are documented, archived, and/or tracked. The Underwriting Specialist provides customer support to pool members, external partners, and other PRISM departments.

Job Requirements

The ideal candidate will be a self-starter and team oriented, with a strong attention to detail, organization, and an ability to work within tight deadlines. The ideal candidate will have experience or education in underwriting, risk management, claims, pool administration, or finance. This position will support the Senior Underwriters in Underwriting activities, which may include the evaluation of financial data and the development of insurance premiums. The department primarily utilizes Excel or Access for developing premiums and reporting, proficiency in these tools or desire and aptitude for developing analytical skills is a plus.

The Underwriting Specialist will be responsible for managing the updating, tracking, and archiving of policy and insurance documents. This position will provide a learning opportunity for someone who has some experience with or is looking to gain experience with underwriting, insurance coverages, evaluating exposure data, and premium development. The Underwriting Specialist must have a service-oriented disposition and a strong interest in being part of a team, collaborating with, and supporting others. The Underwriting Specialist should display good communication skills to support the department in customer service activities.

Physical Requirements

Physical requirements of this position typically include: sitting for long periods of time, reaching, grasping, kneeling, talking, hearing, seeing, repetitive motions, exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or negligible amount of force constantly to move.

Special Requirements

Possession of a valid State of California Driver’s License issued by the State Department of Motor Vehicles, or the ability to obtain one within the first month of employment. Proof of auto insurance with no exclusion for business use is required.
