3 Employment Bills of Interest
The EIA's Legislative Committee reviewed the following bills. While the Committee will not be following them as they are not related to EIA programs, they did believe the topics may be of interest to members and wanted to bring them to your attention.
AB 400 (Ma) - Employment: Paid Sick Days. This bill provides that an employee who works in CA for 7 or more days in a calendar year is entitled to paid sick days, which shall be accrued at a rate of no less than 1 hour for every 30 hours worked.
AB 59 (Swanson) - Family & Medical Leave. This bill expands the circumstances under which an employee is entitled to protected leave pursuant to the Family Rights Act by (1) eliminating the age and dependency elements from the definition of "child", thereby permitting an employee to take protected leave to care for an independent adult child suffering from a serious health condition, (2) expanding the defintion of "parent" to include an employee's parent-in-law, and (3) permitting an employee to also take leave to care for a seriously ill grandparent, sibling, grandchild, or domestic partner.
AB 325 (Lowenthal) - Employee's Right to Bereavement Leave. This bill provides for the right of employees to inquire about, request, and take time off for bereavement leave.
